Life for Sale

Everyone’s selling something.

I walked out of a great church service yesterday, and ran into a friend in tears. I asked her what was wrong, as any good person will do.

“My sister hated the service”, she replied. “She said the guy sounded like he was selling something, and the entire thing so commercial”.

I was mildly offended at first. I mean, give the guy a break. He’s in an evangelical church and asked people to make a commitment for Jesus Christ if they were so inclined.  But was he selling something? Did his invitation to Jesus sound like a sales pitch?

The truth is that everyone is selling something.

The commercials on TV are selling a product. Politicians are selling ideas, or themselves, authors are selling opinions, doctors are selling diagnoses, and teachers are selling information.

Everyone is selling something.

The real issue isn’t that everyone is selling something. The real issue is what is being sold.

And for how much?

Jesus for sale? That’s one way to look at it. The other is the biblical way.

I Corinthians 6:20 says it a little bit differently. It says “You were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.”

Wait….I’m for sale?  Well, if it says he bought you, then I guess you are. That is, if you’ve accepted his offer.

So consider the offer. In Romans 6:23 it says “the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Let me back up a little and restate that. The offer on the table is irresistible. Life for sale, for free!

But not completely free.

It will cost you your life, your body, your all.

And somehow that’s an offer you can’t pass up.

Everyone is selling something. What is it you’re buying?
