All I can think about this morning is just one thing: the balls of my feet. I can hardly walk. A warm shower did not help much. They hurt like stink.
If you’re a woman you’ve already figured it out. Last night I decided to wear my golden sandals to the ministry launch. I thought they were cute. I thought they looked good with my outfit – dressed it up a bit. Grant it, I’ve only worn them once before. They hurt that one time too. But I thought I’d try it again. Maybe this time they wouldn’t hurt as much.
Ha. As if.
All I can think about this morning are my feet.
So I find it doubly ironic that I read this verse in Isaiah 20:2-3 today.
“at that time the lord spoke by Isaiah the son of Amos, saying, “Go and loose the sackcloth from your waist and take off your sandals from your feet,” and he did so, walking naked and barefoot. Then the Lord said, “As my servant Isaiah has walked naked and barefoot for three years as a sign and a portent against Egypt and Cush…”
Three years!! Three years without shoes, or clothes for that matter. And all I can think is, wow, how much quicker getting ready in the morning would be!
But I’m also thinking – how lucky Isaiah was that first day when he didn’t need to put on shoes on sore feet.
Or not lucky….probably didn’t have carpets in those days.
Here’s the thing about shoes that hurt. The pain is not worth it. I know the French would say otherwise, but I disagree. The pain is not worth it. I don’t care how good the shoes may look for an hour or so, if you’re limping by the end of the night, it ain’t worth it.
Many Christians have habits that are a little like painful shoes. They think they look good while they’re doing them, but they bring nothing but pain. They hurt the first time around, and they hurt every single time you do them.
You may convince yourself that if you do it enough you will get calluses on your feet. Your conscience sure may numb a little after a while of bad habits. But the truth remains: shoes that hurt will hurt your feet, and repetitive sinful sin will bring you down and hurt you in the end.
Sometimes the solution is to go barefoot!
But usually the solution is to find the right shoes that fit and that bring comfort and joy.
I’m wearing cute flats today. They look great with my outfit. Even my blistered feet agree.
Isn’t it time to find the “flats” in your spiritual life?
Your soul will thank you for it!
