The Dating Game

If I could date any Bible character it would be David. You probably think it’s because he was a king, and all that. But no – that has nothing to do with it. In fact, it’s a deterrent. I’d have taken David the shepherd.

See, Abraham’s just not really my type. I’m not into the nomadic life. Plus he was looking for someone too pretty. After all, Sarah caught the eye of Kings.

And Noah…too dreamy for me. I would have had a hard time buying that whole ark and rain thing.

And Jacob would have scared me with his past and his lies. And Joseph, well, he would have been hard to meet in prison. Moses, well you know Moses…he was old and wore this really long beard. Oh wait, that’s just Charleston Heston. But seriously, Moses may have been a little insecure for me.

Joshua would have been a possibility. He was tough and strong and pretty overall amazing. But still, something about him….just not enough chemistry.

You’ve got a bunch of other big fat No’s. Like Joseph’s 11 bro’s – not committed enough to the Lord. And Esau…what a mess. And Lot, don’t even start me on that one. There’s Gideon, too cynical when paired up with me. Samson – yuck. Boaz may have made my dream list – old, rich, and kind, but not the picture of the man I would have wanted to date.

We’re getting closer now…Saul. Definitely not my type. Too good looking, too “chosen one” for me. I like the underdog for sure.

And that brings me back to David. David before he became the David of Bathsheba. And maybe even the David of Bathsheba and after. David, the man after God’s own heart.

I believe most Christian women are looking for a man like David. On first glance you may overlook him. He’s good looking, but in a Matt Damon sort of way. Clean cut. Baby face. Handsome. Not too tall. He’s kind of unassuming and low key, being the youngest of a brood of brothers. Because of his place in the family he’s gotten really good at things that other folks haven’t noticed. Like slinging, and harping, and making up poems. He’s dreamy, but masculine. He’s killed some pretty big animals, but he doesn’t really brag about it. He’s a warrior with a heart of gold.

And boy does he have potential. He’s a diamond in the rough. When you meet him he fools you into thinking he won’t amount to much, but someday he’ll just take you by surprise.

And become a king.

But all along, he’s got really just one focus: God and God alone. He recognizes that God has given him life and ability and gifts. He recognizes that God has some pretty great things He may want to use him for. And he’s getting ready for them.

Above all, he’s humble. He doesn’t brag. He doesn’t show off. He just has his eyes staring into heaven, his mind resting on His father. And did I mention his loyalty? This guy is loyal to a fault. He won’t kill his enemy, he’s kind to his bestfriend’s son, and he’ll fight for his girl no matter what.

Lastly, lest you think he’s perfect, he’s a man who has his share of pretty massive failures. But he’s a man who has gotten back up. Not by his own strength, but leaning on grace. Fully, completely, wholly, resting on the grace of God. A man after God’s own heart.

Yeah. I’d marry David.
