I’ve had two things happen to me in the last six months that will either touch you or make you wonder about my sanity.
The first happened about 2 months ago. I got an email from a gal who reads my blog inviting me over to dinner. I didn’t know who she was and she didn’t know me beyond my web posted materials. I’m sure she looked me up to make sure I was a real doctor, but you never know. I drove 30 minutes to her house and had lemon chicken soup. Her kids treated me like a long lost aunt. I had the time of my life.
Then this weekend I find myself the welcomed guest of another family. It’s also an internet based connection initiated by my brother – prompting me to reconsider my harsh stance against internet dating. If I can meet friends online, perhaps it may not be so far fetched to meet Mr.Right online. But I digress. And as I sit here in the guest room writing this blog, it’s easy to wonder about the nature of relationships that allow this kind of familiarity so quickly.
Maybe these kinds of things don’t surprise you, but I”m a city girl where on most days I tend to avoid even catching people’s eye. I’ve got the walk down. Head straight up, pace quick, and eyes looking forward at nothing in particular, no distractions. And above all, no conversation with strangers.
But I failed to mention one basic commonality I share with these two wonderful families. We both serve Jesus Christ and count Him our Lord and Savior. All of a sudden the rules change as we realize that indeed we are in the same family, adopted into the family of God. I am in fact the long lost aunt to my new friends’ kids!
II Corinthians 5:14 says that the love of Christ compels us…that those who live might no longer live for themselves but for him who for their sake died and was raised.
Being a follower of Jesus Christ makes you do crazy things. It makes you do crazy things like open your home to strangers. It makes you do crazy things like love people you don’t know. It makes you do crazy things like visit people you don’t even know.
What kind of crazy thing are you doing because of His love? Jesus did the craziest thing of all. He died on the cross to save you and me.
Now it’s my turn to do something crazy for others!
