One Church

The magachurch has influenced the way we think about Christianity. No longer do we view church as a place where people from differing backgrounds and differing ages and differing races gather. We have now created a church so big with so many compartments that one can afford to be picky.

I’m looking for a bible study of men. Or, I’m looking for a bible study of single women. Or, I’m looking for a bible study of single moms with kids over age 20 but under age 25. Or I’m looking for a group of co-ed singles who work in the loop in the finance world. And on and on and on the list goes.

Frankly, I’m just looking for the group of single guys who are bold enough to ask girls out on a date. But that’s neither here nor there.

That’s just your megachurch, I hear your minds thinking. Wrong. That’s every megachurch. Just check the bulletins. We’ve got the junior highers, the senior highers, the 20 somethings, the 30 somethings, the 40 somethings, the single moms, the senior citizens, the widows, and the newly marrieds.

Demographics split folks into categories. Small groups are logistically based on neighborhoods which results in the rich supping with the rich, and the poor well, breaking bread – literally – with the poor.

You’re being too harsh, you’re thinking. Perhaps I am. Or perhaps I’m just pointing out to a reality that hits right below the belt.

It’s just more practical this way, you’re analyzing. You should change churches and go to a smaller one, you’re advising.

Good points. I’ll consider the advice – and reject it.

Instead, I’ll change the world I’m in.

When I meet a married older women, I’ll learn from her. And when I meet a young married couple, I’ll encourage them. And when I meet a widow, I’ll think of a way to reach out to her. When I meet a single young eligible man, I’ll go out with him. And when I’m placed in a small group with 8 other gals that don’t seem to share one thing in common with me, I’ll remember the words of Paul, my Christian Hero.

“For in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith. For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” Galatians 3:26-28

One church, one commonality: Jesus Christ.

And believe me, that’s a reminder I need today.
