Christmas is Fun

I got in trouble by my mom for being too jaded on Christmas cards yesterday. She thought I wasn’t very uplifting, and I think she may be right.

So today and for the next 9 days until Christmas I will make a concerted effort to cut the sarcasm and be uplifting.

I can be as uplifting as the next person. Maybe even more.

Here’s a list for reasons to be happy about Christmas. No sarcasm intended.

1. Free desserts: The month is busting full with free delicious cookies and peppermint bark all over the office hallways. You can make up some of your Christmas spending simply by bringing a to go box to work with you and filling it when no one is watching. You should be set for the entire month of January.

2. Parties! What’s the Christmas season without a great party. You don’t need to even know anyone or have any friends to be invited. You just keep your eyes open and watch where the people are walking. Put on a red sweater, and everyone will assume you came with that one office worker. Keep a cookie in your hand and stuff it in your mouth if anyone asks you any incriminating questions, and enjoy the party!

3. Free Concerts: You almost can’t go to any mall without enjoying the wonderful and very free kids chorales and Christmas caroling. Find yourself a comfortable bench somewhere and enjoy the show!

4. People watching: Never a better time to enjoy this marvelous hobby that so many of us share. Again, no better place to go than your local mall. Invest in a cup of tea so you don’t look like a gawker and time will fly so quickly you won’t know where the day went.

5. General Good Will: It’s abundant, even cultural this time of year. It’s Christmas and you’ve gotta be nice to your neighbors. If anyone cuts you off in line, just smile sweetly and wish them a merry Christmas. It dampens the insult and lifts the spirits.

6. The weather: Yes, I said the weather. Most northerners know that snow between Thanksgiving and the New Year’s is good snow. It adds to the ambiance and may even elevate tourism and spending in certain locations like downtown Chicago. It’s an entirely different story after January 1, but for now, we love it!

7. Christmas Music: I love the radio this time of year. Whether it’s the jazz station or any top something station, it’s the only time of the year I can actually sing along in the car!

8. The Christmas story: I told you I wasn’t trying to be sarcastic! The Christmas story is in fact the reason for the season. God sent His son in the form of a baby, born in a manger, to a virgin named Mary, so that He could save the world from their sins. I accepted Him over 30 years ago and every year, I have a chance to remember His deep deep love for me.

What does Christmas mean for you? Reflecting on the reason for the season and thankful for each and every one of you!
