Waiting

I want to share with you a poem I read in my quiet time this morning.

You see, my life has consisted of a whole lot of waiting and then a little bit of action. The waiting can get tedious. I often feel forgotten by God in the waiting room.

But much like my patients who wait for me, I am not at all forgotten. I am not at all uncared for or done with.

This poem expresses so well how we as Christians should wait on God. It also expresses the thought that there is purpose in waiting. I know that on an intellectual level, but I often need to remind myself of that in my heart.

God loves me and uses the waiting times to teach me. Mine is to sit quietly and listen to his still small voice.  In my panic and my frustration I can hardly hear a freight train, let alone God’s whisper. Oh, may God grant me a heart that hears, and eyes that see His loving hand in the midst of the waiting.

“Waiting! Yes, patiently waiting!

Till next steps made plain will be;

To hear, with the inner hearing,

The voice that will call for me.

Waiting! Yes hopefully waiting!

with hope that need not grow dim;

The Master is pledged to guide me,

and my eyes are unto Him.

Waiting! Expectantly waiting!

Perhaps it may be today

The Master will quickly open

the gate to my future way.

Waiting! Yes, waiting! still waiting!

I know, though I’ve waited long,

That, while He withholds His purpose,

His waiting cannot be wrong.

Waiting! Yes, waiting! still waiting!

The Master will not be late;

Since He knows that I am waiting

For Him to unlatch the gate.”
