Let me give you some context.
Abraham is 100 years old. Sarah is 90 years old. God had promised them a baby back in the day. So far…nothing.
I don’t know about you, but from my perspective, the odds are stacked against Sarah having a healthy baby.
Reason to give up? Plenty. Reason to wonder about God’s character? Check. Reason to forget that God ever made the promise? If you’re smart, you would.
Then comes Genesis 21:1
“The Lord visited Sarah as he had said, and the Lord did to Sarah as he had promised”.
Wait a second….Sarah? A baby? Did I read that right?
Oh yeah. You’d better believe it.
But more than that, there is a nugget of truth here that must not missed! There is a glimpse into God’s character that must not be forgotten.
Here are some lessons worth noting.
1. It all comes down to God’s word.
Don’t underestimate it. Don’t overlook it. Don’t try to analyze it or minimize it. If God said it, He will do it. He means it. His word is alive and powerful. Believe it!
2. God’s word will come to pass despite great doubts.
You think you’ve got doubts? Perhaps you do. But check this out: In Genesis 18:13 Sarah is caught laughing her head off at the prediction that she’d still have a son. Let’s just say she does not believe God’s word.
But God is a God of grace! He still fulfills His word.
Learn this lesson from Sarah: God’s word is greater than your doubt. Hang on to it with everything you’ve got!
3. God’s word will come to pass despite great scheming.
In Genesis 16 it is Sarah who comes up with the brilliant idea of using her maid Hagar as a “surrogate” mother. The result is Ishmael and centuries of trouble.
No…scheming didn’t work for Sarah, and scheming won’t work for you.
Stop trying to figure it out. God is a God of forgiveness. His word is sure.
It will be accomplished in its time. Wait for it!
4. God’s word will come to pass in the face of the impossible.
In other words, nothing is impossible with God.
A baby at age 90? no problem!
What’s your problem that you think God cannot do? You’re wrong. He is a God who can. The old hymn says “Got any rivers you think are uncrossable? Godt any mountains you can’t tunnel through? God specializes in things thought impossible, he does the things others cannot do!”
Now you tell me -
if this isn’t a God to be loved and obeyed, then who is?
