Telephone Calls

Maybe you go to a big church like I do. Maybe you think your pastor is pretty wise stuff. Maybe you’d love to meet him in person, because you know, I mean you just know, that he’d help you figure out how to resolve that issue in your life. And maybe, just maybe, one day, you have the following conversation with him:

Your new 4G cool cell phone rings.

“Hello?”, you answer.

“Lina? It’s Pastor James”.

“Pastor who?”

“No…Pastor James. Macdonald. Your pastor. At Harvest Bible Chapel. You know, the big guy up front every week?”

“haha, whatever. Call back tomorrow…”

And you hang up.

Phone rings again.

You’re not sure what to do. This time caller ID says it’s pastor James. Uh Oh.

“Lina. It’s really me. Don’t hang up. Just hear me out.”

Silence on your end.

“Listen, Kathy and I would really really like you to come over for dinner tonight. We want to get to know you better.”

Say what?

Still silence on your end.

“Honestly, we just want to get to know you more and hear about your life. You’re single. We know guys. You are about to embark on some ministry adventures. We just want to hear about your life, and help you out any way we can. Is tonight ok?”

You’re just about to fall off your seat by now. I mean, this guy knows people. And he’s, well, he’s Pastor James. He knows the Bible. He is like Dr.Phil on Steroids. He’s like…well, he knows everything. He’s Pastor James. Everyone listens to him. He’s the midas touch of the Christian world. I mean, he may not know much about the dating world out there, but he knows people.

“Um…yes?” You tentatively answer.

Does this scenario strike you as crazy, unbelievable, improbable, and ridiculous?

Maybe for you it’s not Pastor James. But take a second and think about the most influential and powerful person you would dream of having coffee with and laying out your life issues: relationship difficulties? He’s got the answer. Financial advice? Get out your calculator. Professional headaches? You name it, he’s got the perfect solution. Character defects that need straightening out? Here’s a 4 point outline on how you can fix it. Or maybe you just need a sounding board…and that person is willing to take the punches. Just lay it on as thickly and deeply as you need to.

Now just think with me for a minute.

Jesus is all that and more. He’s the God of our universe. He can do anything, anytime, anywhere. He is more powerful, more sensitive than your mind can imagine.

And he’s on the other end of the line. Waiting for you to answer.
