You are at a crossroad. You need to make a decision. Do you go to the left, or do you take the road on the right? Above all, you’re dying to make the right decision.
You and I face this kind of scenario every single day. Do I go out for Chinese or Italian? Do I get the sandwich or the salad? I want to be healthy but I’m really really hungry. Do I marry Peter or John? Or do I remain single?
Some decisions matter a lot. Some don’t. In the case of a meal, you get 3 chances a day, and you’ll have to eat again tomorrow. But maybe you’re facing a big decision, like a job decision, or a relationship decision. The weight of it is heavy on your shoulders. The fork in the road looks more like a boulder on your head.
Decision making and the will of God. How do you get it right every single time?
Today I want to explore 3 things that stand in the way of my making Godly decisions in my life.
1. I’m Sinful.
The more a decision matters the more I become aware of my own sinfulness. It’s like the better the option presented the more I feel as if I don’t deserve it. After all, who am I to think that God would actually use me in this amazing way knowing what I know about my heart and actions?
Here’s the good news: God already knows. And he died to cleanse you of every sin and to give you a clean heart. If sin is keeping you from being all that God wants you to be, confess and forsake it. Rest in God’s grace and make Godly choices. It’s not what I do for God but what He has already done for me that make the story of my life. Live in the light of His grace.
2. I’m Scared.
The second greatest handicap in keeping me from living my full potential is my own fear. I can’t do it, I hear myself say. I’m not good enough. What if I fail? And all of a sudden the only thing I see is the giant in the room. In the words of the people of Israel, I become a wee little grasshopper in the land of giants. David on the other hand refused to focus on his own frailty in the face of Goliath. All he saw was an awesome God fighting for him. Are you letting fear keep you from making right choices? God works through my weaknesses to make much of His amazing glory!
3. I have too much Sense.
Common sense, that is! Common sense is the greatest hindrance against Godly choices. Most normal people wouldn’t do that, you hear others say. It’s like Peter being told by the Lord to leave his entire livelihood and the only thing he knew to become a preacher. Are you kidding me? What would a fisherman know about fishing men? The guy had nets and bait on the brains…Jesus asked him to leave what was familiar and jump on an entirely new venture he knew nothing about. Common sense would say grab your fishing rod and run as far and as fast as possible. Faith says Jesus is the answer. He knows what he’s asking you to do. Follow him with everything you’ve got.
Are you facing a big decision today? What is standing in your way of taking the right turn?
Tomorrow, I’ll discuss how to make the right choice for the Lord. It’s not as hard as you think!
Forks in the road? Nah….I like to think of them as opportunities for God to show off!
