I’m road tripping it today with two friends that I have never spent more than 2 hours with before.
We took off last night at 7pm and will get to our destination later on today. Then we will turn around and come back arriving in Chicago late tonight.
So by tomorrow morning, these gals will be my really really good gal pals.
It’s funny how road trips do that to people.
You set out with a specific destination in mind, you hook up with folks who have the same purpose and you handle the journey as it unfolds with its sunny sides and its occasional cloudy storms.
I really do love road trips. I slept 2 out of the 3 hour drive yesterday, so I probably wasn’t much company, but I was awake enough to hear my gal’s latest boy saga. I know her a lot better today than I did before. We got stuck a little in downtown Chicago traffic, we avoided a few cops on the way, found out Mcdonald’s closes at 10pm in Michigan, and settled for the night in the only hotel on a 40 mile stretch. Good news is they serve waffles in the morning! Can’t wait to get mine in a minute!
Mind you I could have flown to the funeral. Alone. And missed out on meeting Ann the woman who runs the world at the Quality Inn in Durand, Mi.
And honestly, the efficient, “let’s get it done” part of my brain would have enjoyed the minimized time on the road, the increased productivity of sitting back while someone else was driving the plane, and the avoidance of the mandatory small talk during the first hour of the trip until that general comfort level with other people was finally reached!
Life was never meant to be lived alone. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. Life was meant to be lived with others.
Even though they sometimes do things differently than you would, even though they let you down more often than you can count, and even though you may be able to do things a million times better on your own.
No matter where you live, get your own road trip going. Find a group of pals, split the gas costs, find your destination on your GPS (for the Christian, group of pals = a small group, destination = heaven, GPS = the Bible, gas = the Holy Spirit, leader = God) and let the journey unfold with its frequent hiccup and occasional rainbow.
You’ll thank me for this advice on the other side of heaven!
