More than I can Handle

It happens on any given day.

All of  a sudden it feels like it’s way more than you can handle.

There are too many errands to run, too many places to go, too many projects to complete, too many kids to feed. Ok, I’m exaggerating now, but you get the point.

What should you do when you feel like you’ve got way more on your plate than you can handle?

I have 4 things to say to you if you feel like you’re facing more than you can handle.

1. It’s ok not to do everything. Some things simply won’t get done and that’s ok. Here’s a good word for you: Prioritize. Now that’s easier said than done. The key to prioritizing is to learn to differentiate the urgent from the important. We live in a time where everything seems urgent. Fix my dinner – now. Take me to soccer practice – now. Finish that report – now. Go to the store – now. And in the frenzy to meet your self-made deadlines for what is urgent, you often sacrifice that which is most important. Stop. Breathe. Meditate. Pray. Jesus said it this way: Seek first the Kingdom of God, and all these things will be added to you. Do you believe it?

2. It’s ok to delegate. Here’s a freeing truth: you don’t have to do everything yourself. Some things can be delegated. I love that word. You know that voice that tells you that no one can do it better than you? Well it belongs to pride. Stop listening to it. Think through your tasks for today, and make a list of those things that someone else can do. As I’ve learned to delegate better, I’ve found that people take great joy in helping me. I’m thankful for them, and am learning to trust them more.

3. It’s ok not to be perfect. I can see some of you squinting at the screen and shaking your head at me. But listen carefully: many people have sacrificed much in an effort to be perfect. Many women remain single looking for that perfect man. Many books remain unwritten waiting for that perfect intro. Many goals remain unmet waiting for that perfect moment. Listen – it’s not gonna happen. We live in a less than perfect world, and what God expects if your best. People ask me how I can blog daily. Easy. I simply write. It’s not always perfect, but it’s always done.

4. It’s ok to be honest. Hey, it’s ok to tell the truth. It’s ok to admit that you’re human, and that you simply have more than you can handle on your plate. Here’s a secret for you: start the day by honestly telling God. I find that once I tell him how I feel, I often don’t have to share it with anyone else, and he gives me the strength to find the courage to face that mountain that seemed more than I can handle. The result is that while others may think I’ve got it all together, I know without a doubt that I’d be lost without Him.

And that’s a good place to be. So take a minute right now and tell God exactly how you feel.

He promised that He wouldn’t give you more than you could handle.

Do you believe Him?

You had me until the end. I have to disagree with your last statement. I have been in the hardest year of my adult life. Let me tell you it is way more than I could handle. God does give us more than we can handle. If I could do this on my own strength, I wouldn’t need Christ. That is where my strength is, that is how I can get through.

well, i’d have to say yes, and no. first, of course i agree with your comment – and if you didn’t get that #4 was directly saying “it’s only through Christ that I can do anything” then I wasn’t clear enough and i apologize.

but the issue of God giving us more than we can handle…..i’d offer I Corinthians 10:13 which i’m sure you already know. He does say he will not let us be tempted beyond our abilities….

i don’t know. either way sorry for any lack of clarity, and my prayers to you right now. God is stronger than our worst circumstances. I’d be lost without him.

      thanks for your comment.

I agree. I think God desires to do the impossible through us to bring glory to himself. He never says “I won’t give you more than you can handle.” He only says we won’t be tempted beyond our abilities. Not the same thing. I also will be praying for you~

Got some good comments and emails bout my last statement – God doesn’t give us more than we can handle. I’ve been asked if I really believe that. Here’s a response to an email I received that I wrote and may help you..

i really don’t believe God gives us more than we can handle. I believe it “feels” like more than we can handle often, but he does give the strength and ability and grace as we go through trials.

the verse in I Cor 10:13 is a great verse for that. If you look at the greek word for “tempted” you will find a much broader definition of the term than we think of in the english language. The word is periasmos – meaning an experiment, a trial, a temptation.

James Macdonald has a great great book on the topic of trials called “when life is hard”. on page 26 he gives a definition of trial that is great. he says it is “a painful circumstance allowed by God to change my conduct and my character”. Wow. he says a lot more about trials in the book and i’d encourage you to get it!! it will bless you!

having said that, the fact that you are alive and having this conversation with me via email is sign enough that you have not been beaten yet!! God is at work in your life, and I praise him for it.

Keep leaning into him. He will surely end this season when he sees it’s time. I do believe him.

    hope this helps, Lina

ps james macdonald’s follow up book “always true” spends some time exploring this particular verse I cor 10:13 on page 118-119. if you happen to have that book, spend some time reading it. James also comments that the word temptation and trial in the Greek original is used interchangeably.

That’s great news for us believers who put our faith in a savior that never disappoints and always makes a way of escape!

Do you think it’s our lack of faith/faithfulness that causes us to feel that way?

What great reminder for me, that God never gives us more then we can handle. For me its when I’m at work that I need this reminder.

So at one point this past year, I was ‘feeling’ so overwhelmed with having more than I could handle…. but I knew God had led me to everything on my plate… so in prayer i asked how to do it…felt i needed more time… and there were several power outages at my work… no one could go in for a few days. For me, time stood still….i got the things done… and its another page of God’s glorious provision in my testimony. ~depending on Him
