I like to talk. Always have. Always will.

But I’ve learned that it doesn’t take much for me to say too much and that there are times where I’ve got to just watch my mouth.

We live in a society where free speech is not only allowed but encouraged. I love that. But the downside is that we have become a people who over-talks, over-promises, and under-thinks. Continue Reading…

Life is a team sport.

It doesn’t matter how independent or autonomous you think you are, you are still part of a team.

Your team may be your family, your church, your corporation, or your network of neighbors and customer service representatives, but the fact is that you are part of a team somewhere in your life.

We all want something we just can’t seem to get.

A boyfriend. A job. A certain amount of money in the bank. A life.

Minutes turn into days turn into months with the deafening echo of one word: Why?

I love Father’s day because I love my Dad.

He’s everything a dad should be. He’s patient, and generous, and loving, and kind.

I realize that many cannot say the same. Father’s day is often a reminder of what is not.

Yet God chose to identify Himself as our Father.

Some things in life don’t require endurance – like eating ice cream and roller coaster rides.

They offer immediate gratification and have very little impact on others. They leave you for the most part unchanged.

Endurance is the ability to last in the face of fatigue, stress, and adverse conditions.

Patience is not the same thing as endurance. You can endure without patience or be patient without having endurance.

Don’t confuse the two. You need both.

The best part about endurance is after.

Hebrews 10:36,39 – “For you have need of endurance,, so that when you have done the will of God you may receive what is promised. But we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who have faith and preserve their souls.”

It’s graduation season.

It doesn’t matter if you’re graduation from Kindergarten or your PhD, there is something very exciting about graduating from anywhere.

I should know. I’ve graduated so many times I’ve lost count of how many.

But graduation can be anticlimactic and fear inducing. You’re proud of what you’ve accomplished, but you have no idea what you’re going to do with yourself tomorrow.

I’m as disciplined as a competitive swimmer by nature.

I get up in the morning. I read my Bible. I get ready for work.

I don’t expect much from God – perhaps just a little nugget of truth for the day.

But every once in a while God hits me with a handful of words that knock my breath away. It happened this morning. Here’s what I saw while reading in Proverbs. Continue Reading…

It would be easy to laugh if the story wasn’t so pathetic.

It would be easy to accuse if the story wasn’t so familiar.

One day he’s a respectable member of the house, the next he’s TMZ’s favorite target.

The latest article I read in the Chicago Tribune reports that US Representative Anthony Weiner has taken a leave of absence to seek therapy for his illness. Continue Reading…

They look innocuous when you first see them.

They are usually clean cut, polite, and friendly.

But what you don’t know is that they are a part of a tight nit network of species that have been specially inoculated to guard against folks like you and me.

I dare you to try and cross them. I dare you to second guess them. Continue Reading…
