I just took a short walk around my small house and stood quietly in front of the row of dying plants that I had attempted to grow earlier in the summer.
The thing about it is that a couple of weeks ago, I had to make a decision. My life was starting to take on the appearance of a large boulder on my shoulders, and I knew it was time for action.
Something had to go before I risked being crushed. I could quit my job. On the upshot I’d have to move back home and my mom could do my laundry (yeah, right! You know I wasn’t raised by a sucker!!). I could stop talking to people. That would work for a while. Or maybe not. I could stop cooking. Oh, wait, I don’t really cook as it stands. That wouldn’t help.
The point is that there just weren’t enough hours in the day to get everything done. So I had to choose: People or plants. Sanity or perfection.
I chose well, and the result is that I have to plan a plant funeral this week soon.
Oh well. I can live with that.
How’s your life shaping up for you? Is it time to make some choices? Are you trying to do it all and finding out that nothing’s really getting done?
I love the story of Mary and Martha the day they had Jesus over for dinner. You can read it again in Luke 10:38-42. Martha was a task oriented, goal setting, purpose driven woman. She got the job done, and she did it well. Mary on the other hand, understood the value of relationship and priorities. So, the food may not taste as well, and the plates may not match the napkins. And maybe the clothes would sit in the dryer for a little while longer. But she got the point.
People matter more than projects. You can’t work for God until you’ve spent time worshiping God.
Little by little, I’m learning that relationship drives results.
Some things have to go.
What will that be for you?
