Diamond Earrings

I found a diamond earring in my sofa last week. It was shortly after a group of women had left my home for bible study.  I emailed and asked each of them whether they were the lucky owners of that earring, and each denied it.

It was then that I started having happy thoughts.

Until I remembered that there was another group of women over at my house about a month ago, and even though none had mentioned the earring, well, I felt obliged to mention it to them.

I ran through the list of women and started with the friend I thought most likely to have a 1 carat diamond earring.

It wasn’t hers. I sighed in relief.

Later that day, I was having breakfast with that same group of women from that party, and to my pleasant surprise, not one of them claimed that earring.

I was so excited. I sat at my desk and started to think about all the things I could buy with the money once I pawned off that earring. I made a list of the things I would buy.

But there was still one lady that had missed breakfast that morning and who had been at my house a month earlier.  Surely the earring wasn’t hers.

With great trepidation, I texted her the cautious question. I didn’t hear back for a while.

I looked at my list again and told myself not to rejoice too soon.

Twenty four hours later my hopes were dashed when she texted me back telling me she was in fact the one that had lost her crystal earring that looks like a diamond!!

Alas, my joy was short lived. I guess it would have been anyway, had I made it to the pawn shop.

Jesus describes the kingdom of God as a treasure hidden in a field, which a man when he finds it gives up all has has for it. Jesus also describes the kingdom of heaven like a fine pearl of great value, which if found, the merchant would sell all he has for that great pearl.

The problem with so many belief systems is that they are fakes, like my friend’s crystal earring. They look valuable at first, but you don’t even notice when you lose them because they are of little value. And if found by someone like myself, they add nothing to my life but unfulfilled expectations and disappointed hopes.

Not so with the truth of Jesus Christ. He is the way, the truth and the life. When you meet Him, no one else will ever satisfy you again, everything else pales in comparison to Him.

If you don’t believe that, you haven’t met him yet.
