Rep Weiner’s Fall from Grace

It would be easy to laugh if the story wasn’t so pathetic.

It would be easy to accuse if the story wasn’t so familiar.

One day he’s a respectable member of the house, the next he’s TMZ’s favorite target.

The latest article I read in the Chicago Tribune reports that US Representative Anthony Weiner has taken a leave of absence to seek therapy for his illness.

Since when has stupidity become an illness?

It’s far too tempting to cast stones on such an easy target. Instead, I’d like to share Five lessons about falling from grace from the example of Rep.Weiner.

1. You will be found out. It doesn’t matter if you’re the King of Israel or a member of the senate, God has promised that your sin will find you out (Number 32:23). In the New Testament He says there is nothing hidden from his sight (Hebrews 4:13). So stop trying to convince yourself that no one will ever know. He already does know.

2. You are just like everybody else. I have to admit that Rep.Weiner’s naivety has caught me by surprise. Even the teenagers I care for in the ER know that every picture you post on facebook will come back to haunt you. There are no exceptions to that rule. We’ve seen the demise of umpteen political figures, and we will continue to see more. Why you think you will be the exception to that rule beats me.

3. You will pay a price. It’s been said that sin will take you farther than you want to go, keep you longer than you want to stay and cost you more than you want to pay. Rep.Weiner thinks he will go on with business as usual. A week in a spa somewhere and all will be well. All I can suggest to Rep.Weiner is to give Tiger a call.

4. Your private life does matter. It doesn’t matter how successful you seem to be in public, it’s your private life that matters most because sooner or later the two will intersect. If you want to make an impact in this world, start by making sure your private life is in order, even if you never earn any public recognition. The alternative is deathly.

5. You can always repent. King Saul screwed up and is long forgotten. King David screwed up and is forever remembered. The difference between the two is that one of them had a heart that repented. The future is grim for Rep.Weiner. No amount of treatment will help him. The only effective cure for sin is fully turning to the Lord Jesus Christ who has atoned for our sin.

So enough finger pointing and laughing your head off.

Perhaps it’s time to look in the mirror and assess yourself first.

Classic Lina…”Since when has stupidity become an illness”…I mean SOMEBODY had to ask the question – glad it was you because you tend to ask those sort of questions very well! Not going to make the pharmaceutical companies happy thought because they were just about to market a pill for that illness, and a LOT of people were going to get prescriptions.

On a serious note, I love number 5 – great focus on the difference between the two – we are, each of us, either Saul or David. Thanks for shining much needed light on the difference our hearts response to sin makes.

Excellent analysis. A lifestyle of repentance is what we all need. Sin contaminates us so many times a day and the only solution is to stay close to the cross..
