On July 19, 1987, my family moved from Beirut, Lebanon to Green Bay, Wisconsin.
I was 15 years old. I have never looked back. I have never regretted it.
We didn’t take a boat across the ocean. We didn’t stop at Ellis Island. We didn’t wave at Lady Liberty.
But we did embrace freedom. We did cherish the notion that….we hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
Endowed by our creator with certain unalienable rights.
The creator has indeed endowed us with certain unalienable rights. Paul says it like this in Galatians 5:1
“For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.”
Freedom from what?
- Freedom from besetting sin.
- Freedom from the enemy.
- Freedom from the fear of man.
- Freedom from false expectations.
Freedom is your right, Christian. It’s your legacy. The chains have been broken.
You are free.
Do you act like it?
What if after moving from Lebanon, my family stayed in the basement, stock piled on bread and water, and kept the lights on low in case the enemy came marching by?
What if after moving from Lebanon, my family didn’t send us to school for fear of the bombs?
It would be silly, wouldn’t it? You’d wonder about our understanding of the western world. You’d wonder about our sanity.
Or you’d simply just tell us: You’re free!
You don’t have to be afraid anymore. You no longer have to live in the darkness.
You’re free!
Do you get it?
So why don’t you start living like it?
