On Fridays, I like to cover a food related item and share a recipe. Today, I want to share 5 lies we believe about food:
1. I will be happier if I’m thin. That is a lie. You may be healthier if you’re thinner, and your energy may be higher, but true and lasting happiness has nothing to do with your weight.
2. Food will meet my needs. Not even that pint of ice cream sitting in your freezer will meet that gut wrenching feeling in your heart. Only Jesus Christ can satisfy your deepest longing. Save yourself the trouble, stop opening the fridge, and open your Bible instead!
3. I can control what I eat. Um, easier said than done! I never think about food as much as I do the minute I decide to lose a couple of pounds. You will need plenty of discipline and a partner to win the battle of the bulge. Food is like forbidden sex – it is a monster that is hard to tame on your own!
4. People will like me more if I’m thin. That soft voice in your head or on the other side of your bed is plain wrong. Your husband may think that he will like you more when you lose the 20 pounds you gained after baby number 5, but show him he’s wrong. I know plenty of overweight women with satisfied and happy husbands. The key is how you view yourself. So… how do you view yourself?
5. God will use me more if I’m thin. Again, a total lie. God loves you just the way you are. The issue of weight loss is partially a societal issue, and partially a health one. I’ve been trying to lose 10 pounds for the last 20 years. Frankly, at this point I may go to my grave with that extra 10 pounds. I’m dealing with it and God is using me plenty.
Look, I’m not saying you may not need to lose a few pounds. Based on statistics on weight in the US, we all need to lose a few pounds. The problem is that we – especially women – have allowed this issue to totally dominate our thoughts and lives.
Enough already!
God loves you. Believe it. Live like the woman He has made you to be – fearfully and wonderfully made.
All right. I’m skipping the recipe after all and let’s talk about food instead. What’s your struggle with food? Got any other great tips on food for the readers? Share them in the comments section!
