Any person can start a blog.
But only a few have what it takes it keep it going.
Maybe you’re considering starting a blog, or maybe you already have one but are discouraged by the slow growth you’ve seen in followers.
Don’t be discouraged. The truth is that over 90% of peole who start a blog quit it in less than a year. If you’re serious about blogging, here are some tips to help you maintain your blog over the long haul.
1. Be Focused. You’ve got to know why you blog in the first place. Is it simply to be heard and gather a following? If that’s the case, you won’t last. Are you passionate about your message? Do you believe what you write? Readers smart and can tell when you’re not being truthful. Remind myour readers from time to time what your blog is about. That will help you stay focused on your message.
2. Be Consistent. Readers want some expectation as to how often you blog and what themes you choose. I blog daily which is crazy, but give myself a break on Fridays – my recipe days. I also tend to write a church related blog on Sunday. Mondays are my how to days. You figure out how often you want to blog and make sure your readers know it. Pick a system you can keep up with. But do know that most successful blogs post at least 3-5 times a week.
3. Be Patient. I read somewhere a while back that you’ve got to post at least 500 blog posts before you see a breakthrough in number of followers. I even saw a chart that showed the incredible curve proving that point. I don’t know if it’s true, but for me it was a good goal to work towards. Once I get to 500 posts I’ll need a new statistic to motivate me!
4. Be Passionate. Would you still blog if no one read what you wrote? You’ve got to figure out that answer before you go on. I can always count on my mom to read my posts, but I believe that I would continue writing even if no one read my posts (It does make it a lot funner when I know a bunch of you are reading too). See, I blog about something I believe in with all of my heart. I believe in what I write. If you’re considering starting a blog, make sure you pick a topic you are absolutely in love with.
5. Be Informed. It helps to know some basics like how to set up a blog, and who you want to reach etc. I have used several websites to help me become more informed on the blogging world. The few that I really like are: tentblogger, chris brogan’s blog, and problogger. You will find a wealth of information there. I also find some great tips on writing at Michael Hyatt’s blog.
If you have any other questions on the basics of blogging, leave me a comment. You can also tell us about your site in the comments section too!
