Inconvenient Love

Love is never convenient.

Imagine you’ve driving along the road and you hit a pack of buffalo. What do you do?

You can either run over them. Or you can go around them. Or you can wait patiently for them to move.

But one thing you can say about a pack of buffalo in your way: It’s not convenient.

Certain people have a way of creeping up on you like a pack of buffalo in the middle of the road. They come out of nowhere, but you can’t ignore them.

We see this happen in Luke 10:29-37 in the story of the good Samaritan. A man was robbed and left naked and half dead in the middle of the road.

Just like  a pack of buffalo in your way.

What do you do if you’re faced with a buffalo in your way?

You can do what the Priest did and cross the street.

You can do what the Levite did and take a peek.

Or you can do what the Good Samaritan did and love him, even when it is supremely inconvenient. You’re on your way to an important meeting after all. You’re a Samaritan, you remind yourself – the least likely person to stop. You could excuse yourself. The religious folks didn’t help him, you justify in your mind. You certainly won’t be paid back.

You have every reason to keep on walking. But you don’t.

You understand that love is inconvenient.

So you surrender to it.

Sounds difficult? It is. Sounds unrealistic? Yep. Sounds ridiculous? You better believe it.

But someone did it for us one day on a cross. It was inconvenient. It was ridiculous and unrealistic.

It was the most amazing thing ever to happen in the history of the world.

Are you willing to give of your time?

Are you willing to give of your resources?

Are you willing to open your eyes and see the buffalo in the middle of the road?

Are you willing to let your heart feel the pain that you see?

You should. After all, He did it for you.

Jesus did it for us. That is true He did not give of what He had, He gave Himself and that is much more amazing. Those are good reminders to help keep us on track.

What if you are the “buffalo” in the middle of the road and appear to be an inconvenience to others? I’ve experienced both sides. It’s not pretty being unloving and being unloved.
