I would like to introduce you to two very special people in my life. They represent the next generation. They are my nieces, Maya and Leya.
Maya is 10. Leya will be 9 in a couple of weeks.I’m always interested in how the next generation views the world. They will be the ones we hand it to, after all. So I thought I’d start by asking my nieces.
Me: I’m so glad you could join us. Let’s start with this: what grade are you in and what do you like best about school?
M and L: we’re in the 3rd and 4th grade. We like art the best!
Me: The President and his wife are really worried about bullying. Have you guys run into a lot of bullying at your school?
M and L: Um…(thinking)…no. Not much bullying at our school. I guess if you do you get reported to the principal and get a detention.
Me: Well, I guess that resolves that, doesn’t it? Well, tell me, girls, do you have boyfriends?
M and L: hehe. NO!!! What about you, aunt Lina?! Aren’t you ever getting married?
Me: Hey, now, I’m the one asking the questions here. Shush. Try answering this instead…What do you think is the greatest global issue we are facing in the 21st century?
M and L: huh?
Me: What i meant to say was, What’s the biggest problem the world is facing?
M and L: tsunamis, wars.
Me: Sounds like you’ve been watching the news with your parents. Do you think there’s anything you can do about it?
M and L: Well, we can pray for them.
Me: If you had a piece of advice to give to the prez, what would you say?
M and L: Get pets for every kid in the world.
Me: Um….let’s try that one again…
M and L: Can we go out and play yet?
Yes. You can. And so can all of you. Have a great saturday, friends!
