Macro Insurance

I’m in the middle of refinancing my home. It may have been a dumb idea. I know it looked good on paper. Who doesn’t want a 30 year mortgage at 4.7% interest rate? But the headache of getting everything together has made me think twice about the intelligence of my decision.

In the process of refinancing, though, I’ve been given a repeat glimpse into the amount of insurance we carry in our meager 70 something year life. Everyone’s trying to guard against something. I made a list of the kinds of insurances that most of us have.

Life insurance.

Health insurance.

Disability insurance.

Car insurance.

Rental car insurance.

Home insurance for the structure.

Home insurance for the home contents.

Plane ticket insurance.

Vacation insurance.

Television insurance.

Exercise equipment insurance.

Iphone insurance.

Any electronics insurance.

I’m sure you can think of a handful of other insurances that I forgot to mention. Feel free to add them in the comments section.

The point is this: we are all protecting ourselves against something. We live in fear of disaster.

I know what you’re thinking so before the comments start exploding from your end, I understand that it is the responsible thing to have insurance. You need to protect and provide for your family. You actually can’t even refinance your home without having adequate insurance. But is there a point where we may have carried things too far?

Should we be selling relationship insurance against hurt and divorce? Oh wait – it’s called a prenuptial.

Listen, I’m not asking you to get rid of your paper security. But I know that by the time I die I will have spent thousands of dollars insuring things that will never break and preparing against the disaster that will never come.

I also know that the Word of God has some advice on this topic.  Proverbs 21:31 says this:

“The horse is prepared for battle but safety is of the Lord.”

I’m not sure where the line must be drawn, but I believe that God is the one who gives health and safety and life and provision. I’m not saying log off this site and start canceling insurance plans. But perhaps a reminder of who controls our lives is in order.

You can prepare against disaster. But God controls your life.
