I have three big writing projects planned for this summer.
They’re big, they’re scary, and they must get done by September.
Everyone sets out with goals in life. You may be looking at a work related project, or a personal goal you’d like to achieve. But sometimes it just seems too hard.
It’s easy to get intimidated by it and call the whole thing off. I tend to be task oriented and pretty productive in life. A lot of people often ask me how I get so many things accomplished in a day.
I’m going to share 4 basic principles that have helped me keep the goals I make.
1. Take Baby Steps. You’ve heard it said before: the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. That’s not just nice Chinese philosophy, it’s the truth. I write just one blog a day with a few exceptions. One of my current projects right now is to write a year long Bible Study curriculum of the book of Acts, and guess how I’m writing it? One chapter at a time. You need just enough light for the step you’re on. So break down your project into many little goals and focus on each little piece instead. It will surprise you how much you’ll have done by the end of this week!
2. Lean Heavily on your Father’s Steps. I know without a shadow of a doubt that my productivity increases and my anxiety level decreases exponentially when I put my feet right on top of my Father’s and allow Him to guide me along. That means there are certain steps I cannot skip like having a brief quiet time in the morning to invite Him in, praying regularly during the course of the day. The secret to peace is abiding in Christ.
3. If you fall down, get back up quickly. Every toddler learning how to walk will fall down at least once – every few steps! The key is not to avoid falling but to hurry up and get back up quickly when you do fall down. Had a bad day last week? That’s ok, tomorrow is a new day. Just turn the page over and look straight ahead. Stay focused. Don’t give up.
4. Get an audience. Have you ever noticed how a toddler who is just learning to walk gathers himself an audience and thrives off of them? When they clap he takes another step. When they smile he beams and moves forward. I have found that the more accountability I set in my life the more productive I am. Right now I have over 100 women expecting me to show up in September ready to teach the book of Acts. I also have a prayer group that just started gathering regularly to pray for me as I allow God to use me. I’m so thankful for them.
It doesn’t matter how big your project is, or how hard it seems. It can be done.
