Some days I’m just not in the mood.
I’m not in the mood to blog. I’m not in the mood to go to church. I”m not in the mood for much.
I’m sure you have days like that. Perhaps you’ve worked too hard. Perhaps you’re ready for a day off, or you just want to sleep in. What do you do when you’re not in the mood but you have to write a daily blog on Biblical insight for every day life?
I suppose you do the only thing you can do: you go to the Bible for insight.
So tonight I found myself meandering through the pages of the Bible for just the right verse. I flipped through God’s Word apathetically, wishing I was watching TV instead. Not sure where I should read, I decided to catch up on my year long Bible reading plan. I found myself in II Kings 4.
My favorite all time message ever preached is from II Kings 4:1-7. The pastor is James Macdonald, my pastor and the best preacher I know.
Seven short verses. Two main characters. Four main points.
1. We are all desperate. The widow had nothing left. Her husband was dead. The creditors had come. Her two kids on the verge of being taken away. Hungry, tired, disappointed, desperate – frankly she was not in the mood for much. Are you in a desperate place today? Take heart.
2. God wants only what you have. Elisha asked her just one question: what do you have in the house? She didn’t have much – just a jar of oil. What can you do with a jar of oil? Not much, but it’s a start. What’s in your hand, friend? All I have in my hand is a Bible and a keyboard. But it’s a start.
3. God does only what you can’t. Some things I can do, and some things only God can do. The widow had to go to the neighbors and get some extra tupperware. A lot of tupperware. That was her part. The filling of the jars with the oil was God’s part. Some things I can do. I can open the Bible. I can drive to church. I can ask the neighbors for help. But only God can do the miraculous. Will you take that first step of faith and go? I did. And the blog is almost done.
4. God fills only what you offer. She could have stopped at 3 jars. And she would have had just 3 jars full of oil. But she didn’t. She took a jump off the diving board into the deep end, and got her head way under water in faith. She gathered every jar in the neighborhood until there were none left. And God filled every single jar. I want more than two dollars worth of God. I want it all. The amazing thing is that He gives it all.
And suddenly I’m in the mood. For God, for church, for you.
Happy Sunday.
