4 Secrets of Successful Leaders

I’ve met all kinds of leaders in my short life.

The good. The bad. The ugly.

But at the core of every leader is one common thread: the desire to succeed.

Whether you are the CEO of a big corporation, or a leader at home, you need to know these  four secrets of leaders who succeed.

  •  What you do in moderation your followers will do in excess. You may have figured this one out by now and if you’re a parent I have a feeling you have your own personal gory version of this principle. But it stands true that what you do in moderation your followers will do in excess. This applies to morality, values, and behaviors. If you come in to work a few minutes late every day, your people will learn to stretch the clock as well. If you check the occasional text message during the staff meeting, your followers will be dominated by their smart phones the entire time! My advice is to err on the side of caution in all things!
  • Where you lead they will follow. Listen this isn’t brain surgery! What makes you a leader is your ability to lead. But take a moment and weigh the impact of this powerful statement. You are responsible for taking your followers somewhere. Ask yourself: where will that be? You can’t take them anywhere if you don’t know where you’re going. So figure it out quickly. The most successful leaders have learned that the more regularly and consistently you remind your followers of where you are going the more likely they are of following you there!
  • What you say they will hear. Oh, there’s a fly in every room, a mouse in every corner, an eavesdropper on every team. So open your doors wide, delete questionable emails, and stop whispering. Instead, choose your words carefully and remember their impact. Your followers are listening. They hear when you’re afraid, they listen to your doubts. But they also hear when you have passion, and they listen when you express love. This is a weapon you can use to your advantage.
  • How you respond they will emulate. If you haven’t figured it out by now, I’ll spell it out for you: the leader sets the tone for the entire team of followers. If you lose your cool every time things don’t go your way, your followers will pick up on it and mimic you next time. On the other hand, if you treat obstacles as opportunities, if you correct those you disagree with in love, if you’re quick to ask for forgiveness, well, you get the point.

So – what kind of leader do you want to be?

A successful one? Or a forgotten one?

You choose.

Good Morning, Dr. Lina! Loved this today! In answer to your question, I want to be the kind of leader who strives to be Christ-like in all things. I may fail from time to time and I may not know all the answers, but I would hope others would see that I’m trying to live intentionally for Christ.

I once read this quote by you, “Waiting is part of the process. It makes you who Christ wants you to be.” I wrote this down on a notecard and placed it on my desk in a prominent position where it’s been for months. You’ve inspired me to “press on”, not just in my career, but in ALL things.

Blessings to you in your life’s work!
