The Battle of the Mind

Have you ever taken your hands off the steering wheel for a while? If you don’t use your knee to balance the steering wheel, you will likely veer straight into a ditch.

It’s the same way with your mind. The greatest battles most of us will face will happen in our minds. Defeat, discouragement, worry, anxiety, fear, anger, depression, jealousy, lust, envy, bitterness, doubt, the list can go on and on.

You cannot let your mind wander off on its own, or you will fall into a ditch of despair. Paul says it this way in II Corinthians 10:5 “casting down imagination and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ”.

I started a new job this week, and believe me, the temptation to be discouraged and overwhelmed is great. So I’ve had to keep my mind from wandering into the neutral zone – there is no such thing as neutral when it comes to the mind – and I’ve had to willfully fix my mind on the word of God.

So here’s where my mind has been fixed this week. It’s one of my favorite passages of Scripture and I hope it will encourage you no matter what the battle in your mind is. God is able to do more than you can ask or think in terms of granting you victory over sin – any sin! His desire for you is to live Freely and Joyfully no matter your circumstances. Begin by resting in His word. Hang your whole life on His word.  God is great and He does not lie. What is keeping you from taking Him up on His word?

Psalms 37:1-8

“Fret not yourself because of evildoers; be not envious of wrongdoers!

For they will soon fade like the grass and wither like the green herb.

Trust in the Lord and do good; dwell in the land and befriend faithfulness.

Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.

Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him and he will act.

He will bring forth your righteousness as the light, and your justice as the noonday.

Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him; fret not yourself over the one who prospers in his way, over the man who carries out evil devices!

Refrain from anger, and forsake wrath! Fret not yourself; it tends only to evil.”

Get ready for the future. God has a great one planned for us!
