I call it the Christian hang over.
It’s the morning after Easter weekend.
In the last 72 hours you’ve felt the broad range of human emotion. You’ve gone from extreme sadness on good Friday to the heights of joy on Sunday morning.
You’re over eaten, over sung, over familied, and over churched.
Yep. You know what I’m talking about. It’s Monday morning and you feel like you’ve been run over. To top it off you got up too late to work off those extra thousand calories you consumed at your mother’s brunch yesterday.
They’re just lucky you made it to work. But that’s all they’re getting today: your body in a chair staring into that screen waiting for the magic to take over.
You ever felt a Christian hangover? It ain’t pretty and it better not last.
I’m going to give you Five Secrets to help you get over the Post Easter Blues:
1. Your Worship Team didn’t buy the rights to the worship songs. I bet if you add it up you spent over 30 minutes singing this past weekend. Your voice is so hoarse you can barely talk. But it was great. You loved every minute of it. Why oh why can’t I sing like that worship team? Actually, you can. Turns out the worship team hasn’t called first dibs on all worship songs. The easiest way to prolong the Easter experience and put some zip in your step is to take some worship songs to work with you this morning! You won’t believe the impact it will have on your mood!
2. Your Pastor didn’t buy the rights to the Bible. I’m sure your Pastor is pretty hot stuff, but I’m sure he’s not as good as mine. And I’m sure he did a phenomenal job bringing it yesterday. It was amazing, it was glorious, your heart was thumping, and you just wish you could get just a little bit more of it. You’re in luck. That book your pastor was using? The Bible? It’s available in print format, on line, or in audio version. Listen to it, read it, think about it. Think of it as your morning after Aspirin. You can’t afford to go this whole day without it!
3. Your Hallmark store didn’t buy the rights to the resurrection. Easter is pretty great for so many reasons, and I swore I wasn’t going to use that word (Easter) again for another year. It evokes feelings of joy and excitement for every follower of Jesus Christ. But here’s something to help you make it through this Monday: Christ is risen. He is risen indeed. Not just yesterday, not just a year from yesterday, but every stinking single day. Today is a new day with new mercies and new faithfulness. Grab on to this truth and let Christ change your day no matter how badly it started!
4. Your BFF is closer than you think. I have found over the years that for many Christians the morning after includes some separation anxieties. You’ve just spent a couple of days with some really close friends and loved ones. But now you’re back to the real world where real people say real things and think real ideas that don’t match yours. Don’t worry. You’re not alone. Jesus is the friend that sticks closer than a brother. You may not be in church, but Christ is in you! So you may wanna watch that attitude you’ve been hauling! Jesus sees it too!
5. Your co-workers aren’t impressed with your Morning After Blues. Last but not least, this is one secret you cannot afford to forget. Most of your co-workers just had an ordinary weekend filled with ordinary stuff. They aren’t over fed, over sung, over prayed, or over churched. And their eyes are on you. Be the Christian you were meant to be. Live the life you are called to live. Put on a smiley face and wake up!
Today is a new day! Make it a Godly one!
