There are a lot of things I don’t like.
I don’t like the black and white of winter.
I don’t like the financial pressure of Christmas.
I don’t like long farewells at the door at the end of a party.
I don’t like feeling need.
I don’t like being corrected.
I don’t like exercising.
I don’t like working 12 hour shifts.
I don’t like close football games with my team coming up short.
I don’t like cauliflower or amaretto.
I don’t like knowing I owe someone something.
I don’t like running out of an ingredient once I’ve started making something.
I don’t like delays.
I don’t like planes.
And I sure don’t like working on Christmas day.
But just because I don’t like something doesn’t mean it’s going to go away or even that it can be good for me.
So much of life is about doing things not because you like them but because there is no other way to get the intended result.
I work because I need to pay my bills.
I exercise because I need to stay healthy.
I endure correction because I need to grow.
I wait because I need to get on that plane.
I am sure that Jesus didn’t like being born in a manger. I’m sure He didn’t like giving up heaven for earth. I’m sure He didn’t like the attack of the Pharisees, and I’m sure He didn’t like seeing so much need. I am sure He didn’t like knowing He would die. I’m sure He didn’t like dying on a cross.
But He did it because He knew – there was no other way for you and I to be saved.
He did it for love. He did it for me.
Some things I don’t like, but I do anyway.
Just because He did.
