What the World Needs is Love

What the world needs now is love, sweet love.

It’s the only thing that there’s just too little of.

If you’re a child of the 60′s I can hear you humming along the retro tune.

But there’s more truth to this song than we’d like to face up to.

I’m not talking about mountains, or hillsides or oceans and rivers anymore. I’m talking about that guy in the cubicle next to yours. I’m talking about that girl you can’t stop running into every single monday morning.

Forget about church and sundays and touchy feel-y worship songs. This is real life, and no one, least of all your pastor understands the pain you’ve got to endure day after painful day as you face up to these difficult people.

Does that describe your work environment? If so, I’d like to help you recalibrate the painful people in your life. I’m not trying to be mean here. I’m serious. I believe there are 4 categories of people that are particularly hard to love. But it is these 4 categories of people that God is using to make you more loving. See if you recognize any of them:

1. The Critical One. Hey, do you know that critical guy that never stops whining? You could serve him champagne and caviar, and it’s still not good enough. It doesn’t matter how positive you try to be, he’s got a reason to grouch. After a while, you’re in a bad mood just being around him. But take a load of this: Mr.Critical is really just insecure. Maybe he feels like nothing he ever does really amounts to anything. He needs a hug a steady dose of love in his life. And you’re the one God has chosen to do it! Have fun.

2. The Needy One. Needy people zap all of your energy. Just when you think you can’t give anymore, they find a little piece of you to still grab on to. Needy people certainly need love, but sometimes, they simply need tough love. As much as you don’t want to hear it, it’s time to sit down and have a serious one on one talk with Ms. Needy in your life. I’d encourage you to turn her to the Lord Jesus Christ over and over again. He’s the only one who won’t run out of steam to love her.

3. The Partier. On first glance the partier seems to have it all and doesn’t mind telling the whole world about it. But deep down, the partier is simply looking for connection. He’s the biggest con in the office. He’s lonely and barely recognizes it. Love him with the love of Christ. Don’t laugh at his dirty jokes. Love him enough to put a stop to that nonsense. There’s more to life than partying. It’s about time someone loves the partier enough to tell him!

4. The Do Gooder. You’re probably thinking why I put the do-gooder in the same category as the critic, the needy, and the partier. The truth is that the do-gooder is just as desperate for love as the rest of the gang. The do gooder is tired, worn out, and feels under appreciated. But you’re on to the do gooder and won’t let them settle for less than the genuine love of Jesus Christ. Put your arm around the do gooder, thank her, and tell her that Christ loves her and has already paid the price.

It’s Tuesday. Labor’s day is over.  Now it’s time to show some love.

After all, what the world needs now is love.
