My life is a lot like a Chinese food menu. There are so many options I don’t know what to pick. The more the options the longer it takes me to choose. The other person’s food always looks better than mine. I always end up wishing I ordered something else. And the picture always looks better than the actual dish.
Do you ever feel that way about your life?
I find myself easily distracted and out of focus. I start with a strong sense of purpose, but before long I catch myself preoccupied with lesser thing, things that I was never meant to do. I get sidetracked with my own agenda and tend to forget what my life really is all about. My vision for my life quickly becomes blurred.
Helen Keller once said: “Worse than being blind would be to be able to see but not have any vision.”
Jesus stands in stark contrast to this. He had a vision and a purpose and never lost sight of what was most important. Consider His words in the gospel of Luke:
Luke 4:17 “The spirit of the Lord is upon me because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor”.
Luke 4:43 “I must preach the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns as well; for I was sent for this purpose”.
We make life much more complicated than it is.
God sent His son Jesus to save us from our sin. That’s the good news He’s talking about! Life as we know it on earth is a pit stop to eternity. Jesus Christ came to point us to the only exit leading to eternal life: Himself! As we turn from our sin and embrace Him, our purpose in life becomes simple: to know Him more intimately and to love Him more deeply.
Has your vision become blurred? Have you become overwhelmed by lesser things?
Maybe it’s time to let God restore your sight.
