Word of the Day

I’ve been meditating on a word for some time now. It’s only a 6 letter word, but it feels longer, bigger.  I’ve been chewing on it and thinking about it. I’ve been using it in conversations and trying it on for size.

It’s a word I’m not quite sure what to do with yet, but I’m trying hard to figure it it out.

I want to share this word with you. I hope you will rest on it today. I hope you will take a few minutes to let it sink in, simmer in your minds, settle in your thoughts.

I hope you will like it as much as I do.

It’s the word Compel.

Here’s what the dictionary says about it.

1. to force or drive, especially to a course of action: His disregard of the rules compels us to dismiss him.
2. to secure or bring about by force.

4.  to overpower.
5.  Archaic . to drive together; unite by force; herd.

6.  to use force.
7.  to have a powerful and irresistible effect, influence, etc.

 

Here’s what the Bible says about it.

II Corinthians 5: 14 – For Christ’s love compels us, because we are convinced that one died for all, and therefore all died.

Mark 15:21 – And they compelled a passerby, Simon of Cyrene…to carry his cross.

Luke 14:23 – And the master said to the servant, ‘Go out to the highways and hedges and compel people to come in, that my house may be filled.”

Matthew 5:41 – And whoever shall compel you to go a mile, go with him two.
